Frequently asked questions

What do I need to run Shapemoss?

A Mac running macOS 27 or later. Shapemoss draws with Metal on your Mac’s graphics hardware. No account or internet connection is needed.

What file format does Shapemoss use?

Shapemoss saves scenes as .moss documents. Use File ▸ Save (⌘S) to save, File ▸ Duplicate (⇧⌘S) to write a copy and keep editing, and hold Option for Save As… (⌥⇧⌘S). You can open .moss files from the Finder.

Can I import projects from Neo?

Yes. Choose File ▸ Import Neo… (⇧⌘I) and select a Neo project file (project.neo.json). The shapes, blends, repeats, colors and saved view come in as a new Shapemoss scene, which you then save as a .moss document. Your original file is not changed. Shapemoss is an independent app and is not affiliated with Neo.

What can I export?
  • PNG image — File ▸ Export ▸ PNG Image… (⌘E), at the artboard size or scaled 1×–4× or to a custom long edge, with an optional transparent background.
  • OBJ mesh — File ▸ Export ▸ OBJ Mesh…
  • USDZ model — File ▸ Export ▸ USDZ Model…

Mesh export is unavailable when the scene has no visible geometry; the menu item explains why.

Why does Shapemoss ask me to choose files?

Shapemoss runs in the macOS App Sandbox, which protects your files. The app can only read or write a file you pick in an Open or Save panel, or open from the Finder. It cannot look through your folders on its own. If a file won’t open, open it again with File ▸ Open… (⌘O) or by double-clicking it in the Finder.

Does Shapemoss collect any data?

No. There is no account, no network access, no analytics and no tracking. See the privacy policy.

The canvas feels slow on my Mac. What can I change?

Open Shapemoss ▸ Settings… (⌘,) and use the Viewport pane: move Quality toward Speed, lower the target frame rate, or turn on MetalFX upscaling. The pane also shows the setting recommended for your Mac.

Report a bug

  1. Note what you did just before the problem, step by step.
  2. If you can, save the scene (⌘S) and attach the .moss file.
  3. Take a screenshot with Shift-Command-5 if the problem is visual.
  4. If Shapemoss crashed and macOS offers to send a report, choose to share it, then copy the report text into your email.

Send it to support@reality2713.com with your Shapemoss version, macOS version and Mac model.
